<p>The ad agency of tomorrow needs to be an irreplaceable long-term business partner. They need to be invested in the brands they represent; dedicated to the success of their client’s businesses. Agencies need to position themselves as the in-house marketing team for their clients’ companies.</p>
<p>The success of a client’s brand directly determines the success of the agency. Marketers need to ask hard questions about the client brief &#8211; challenge it, adapt it and make it their own. They are the experts and know what marketing methods work best. This will help to deliver maximum results for the client.</p>
<h2>Become accountable for results</h2>
<p>Agencies of the future need to take pride in their work and be accountable for the results of their campaigns. Agencies may have the right strategies, creativity and communication plans, but these are no good without accountability and set goals.</p>
<p>Marketers need to set key performance indicators (KPIs) that will allow them to track the performance of their campaigns and adjust them where necessary. By being accountable for their results, agencies can deliver more bang for their buck and retain the business.</p>
<h2>Become agile and adaptable</h2>
<p>Agencies that can adapt to change will stand the test of time. This industry is all about survival of the fittest and, as nature has proven, the most agile and intelligent will survive. <p><a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">Advertising</a> is a highly competitive industry in South Africa. With so many agencies of various sizes competing for the lion’s share of the audience, South Africans can easily get lost in the swarm of adverts they get bombarded with every day. To stand out from the crowd, agencies need to become a little more edgy and grab the audience’s attention.</p>
<p>Average <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> campaigns with cringey jingles and lame catch phrases won’t win over an audience. Consumers are becoming experts at blocking out and ignoring most of the adverts they see. It’s a case of too many messages and not enough clout.</p>

<p>If agencies are going to stay relevant and succeed in the future, they need to inspire action and hit the consumer with some fire and flair. Agencies can afford to be more edgy in South Africa; finding a sense of humour and speaking to the audience in a tone to which they can relate.</p>
<h2>The days of politeness and soft-selling are gone</h2>
<p>Those adverts that position a brand as overly-friendly and helpful are not as effective anymore. Audiences can see through fake slogans and actors with whitened teeth. Too many agencies are still trying to soft-sell brands through happy and fuzzy television adverts. The messages are the same &#8211; “we’re here for you”, “trust in our friendly employees” and “your happiness is our priority”.</p>
<p>The best way to stand out now is to take risks. Agencies don’t need to hold back; they should be more direct and in-your-face if they are going to make the consumer sit up and pay attention. Being real about issues is the first step to getting the audience on your side.</p>
<p>Nando’s sums this up and proves a point. By tackling issues of race, politics and black economic empowerment (BEE) in their <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> campaigns, the brand has formed a reputation for being no-nonsense and upfront. People remember their adverts; they get consumers talking and they use a good dose of humour to remind South Africans why the county is so unique.</p>
<h2>Edgy adverts are the most memorable</h2>
<p>To be effective, you need to be memorable. The consumer needs to have your brand at the top of their mind. Being edgy is the best way to have an impact on the consumer. Another tactic to stand out from the competition is to call them out in your adverts.</p>
<p>One of the best examples of this subtle shade-throwing came from Netflix. Their Man in a Van advert had consumers laughing at the complexities of owning a DStv account. Netflix not-so-subtly called out their rival, DStv, in a bid to show consumers how easy it is to sign up and own a Netflix account.</p>
<p>This cheeky approach can also be seen in the <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> war between Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. There’s no harm in making fun of your competitors through a bit of good banter and audiences love it. They get involved and these types of adverts often go viral online.</p>
<p>Agencies who are not afraid to push boundaries will be victorious. They will stand tall among the field of agencies and distinguish themselves above the rest. Being edgy does come with risks &#8211; if done insensitively or by going too far, agencies can land up in legal trouble or alienate their audiences.</p>
<p>However, in a fight for market share, South African agencies do need to start taking more risks and trying new approaches. They need to embrace their edge, use their voice and take a competitive stance in order to win over consumers.</p>

<p>The state of the South African economy means that it will take years to fix. Citizens and business owners will have to tough it out for the foreseeable future. But what does the 2019 Budget Speech mean to creative agencies?</p>
<h2>South Africa entering a period of renewal and reflection</h2>
<p>Minister Mboweni acknowledged that the country’s finances are in a bad state. He said that the government will need to get its affairs in order before any real growth can occur. The country is going through a period of renewal and reflection, fixing past damages while trying to stay afloat and rebuild citizen confidence.</p>
<p>The minister argued that South Africa needs to nurture its businesses during this period of renewal. The purpose of creative agencies is to help other brands and companies succeed. By building brands and developing meaningful campaigns, agencies have an important role to play in the growth of the economy.</p>
<p>Agencies can ensure that brands get through this tough transition period and deliver a return on investment for the business owners. The only way to do this is by creating effective communications and campaigns that have a direct impact on the consumer; by making <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> and marketing campaigns meaningful to the bottom line so that agencies can drive sales.</p>
<h2>Take inspiration from the aloe</h2>
<p>Minister Mboweni arrived at Parliament to deliver his speech, carrying an aloe in a pot. The aloe was a metaphor for South Africa &#8211; a resilient and sturdy plant that is capable of surviving extreme heat and drought. He used the aloe to describe South Africa and its peoples’ ability to endure hardship.</p>
<p>Agencies are similar to the aloe, too. While clients’ budgets shrink, their expectations remain the same. Agencies need to be resilient during these tough economic times, making do with whatever is available. South African agencies are among the best in the world and the work produced in the country’s creative industry is a testament to the talent employed.</p>
<p>This is not the first time South Africa has endured hardships. Revenues have shrunk and expenditures have increased under previous administrations, but South African agencies have emerged stronger on the other side. We just need to be smarter with our money and try to make it go further.</p>
<h2>Going forward after the Budget Speech</h2>
<p>While Minister Mboweni brought to our attention the issues surrounding state-owned enterprises (SOEs), the tax bracket, sin taxes and minimum wages, he highlighted the need to buckle down and press on.</p>
<p>The creative industry can work to raise the quality of its offerings in order to highlight its value to brands. Agencies need to drive their own success and keep their own affairs in order. This will make the industry the best that it can be &#8211; stronger, more efficient and more effective.</p>
<p>Agencies should strive to deliver on their promises but also manage clients expectations during these times. They also need to set meaningful objectives that will truly benefit society and South African businesses. As the economy takes time to recover, agencies can nurture it along the way.</p>

Almost 1000 advertisers spent just under R3,2-billion (excluding production fees) on this form of media alone. That is an incredible amount of money when you consider the effectiveness of the adverts to the audience.</p>
<h2>Effectiveness of adverts needs to be assessed</h2>
<p>Pepe Marais, founding partner and group CEO of Joe Public United, sums it up. “Consider this: of all those spots that flighted in one month alone, how many made an actual impact? Stirred up conversation? Moved people to such a degree that it may just have moved them to purchase?” he argues.</p>
<p>“One? Two, maybe? Resulting in only 0,2% of the total media spend on television in the month of March 2018, to be used to maximum effect,” he explains, adding that that is R3,19-billion down the drain in a country where 30-million citizens can barely afford to eat.</p>
<p>One alarming fact about the effectiveness of these adverts and the amount of money being spent on these campaigns is that few industry leaders seem to be concerned. Their focus is often on profit margins and the bottom line. The <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> industry is losing sight of its creative products in favour of profitability.</p>
<p>Global conglomerates are partly to blame</p>
<p>Over the past two decades, numerous South African advertising and marketing businesses have been purchased by large international conglomerates. These foreign advertising brands have created a profit-focused globalised system in South Africa, where deliveries and income are given more importance than creativity and connection.</p>
<p>“As we started to care more and more about the pennies, we stopped pushing back on market-share motivated, fear-based client demands. Because we had our own market-share motivated, fear-based demands,” says Marais. “We now needed to hang onto every single cent in order to feed the international king at the top of a pyramid scheme of our hard-earned South African rands,” he argues.</p>
<p>The state of the <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> industry can be changed</p>
<p>The advertising industry can be turned around, according to Marais. He suggests that the three key stakeholders (creatives, executives and clients) can make changes that will benefit South African advertising and the effectiveness of its campaigns.</p>
<p><strong>1. Creatives need to be creative</strong></p>
<p>Firstly, creatives need to take ownership of their work and start generating truly creative campaigns that resonate with audiences. The creatives need to produce content that stimulates conversation and imprints a message on the mind of the viewer.</p>
<p>Marais argues that creatives need to work for the love of advertising rather that for the pursuit of awards. “Put your ego in your pocket and put the fame of the brand above that of yourself. This award thing has become silly. It’s time to put that energy into adding value to the world we live in today. A world desperate for creativity,” says Marais.</p>
<p>It has been endlessly proven that more autonomy a creative department has, the better the advertising campaign connects with the audience. Manufacturing creative ideas is difficult, but creatives are able to know what will resonate with a brand’s audience.</p>
<p><strong>2. Executives need to support creativity</strong></p>
<p>The advertising industry is a product-based industry. Therefore, the focus should be on the end product that is delivered to the client, rather than profitability and the bottom line. Marais encourages <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> executives to stand for the product and the power of creativity.</p>
<p>“Standing for your product (just as Steve Jobs as the CEO of Apple, the most valuable company on the planet, stood for his product) is how you create healthy internal and external relationships and, dare I say, better margins. It’s how you create true value for your clients,” argues Marais.</p>
<p>Agency executives have an important role to play in the daily running of the business, but they should also understand the importance of the creative process in building audiences and adding value to advertising campaigns.</p>
<p><strong>3. Clients need to allow the agency to do its thing</strong></p>
<p>The clients are what keeps the industry alive, but they also need to trust in their <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> agency and let them work on campaigns unrestricted. If clients want to truly gain market share and make an impact on consumers, then they need to allow the ad agency to do what they do best.</p>
<p>“These over-governed, over-processed, lacklustre ideas by committee that adorn every inch of the media spaces available to us, both traditionally and digitally, are not only a waste of our collective sweat and the cause of many tears – not to mention the billions of rands of your shareholders – but they simply don’t work,” explains Marais.</p>
<p>He encourages clients to give their agencies more creative freedom. “Empower [agencies] with your trust. Show them more love. And you will find that the more you give, the more you get. Do this, and not only will they be willing to bend over backwards for you, but your brand and product will soar.” says Marais.</p>
<p>These changes will put the South African <a href=\"https://flamedesign.co.za/design/advertising/\">advertising</a> industry back on the road to effectiveness and outstanding deliverables. Freedom and artistic expression are keys to a creative industry that resonates with audiences and enhances sales.<br />
