A once-a-week photography project allows you more time to plan detailed aspects of the challenge. They are also more forgiving when unexpected life events happen, such as falling ill or having to work late at the office. Feel free to change the theme of the project every month, or stick to one topic for the whole year.

Take inspiration from a song or an album

Music is a creative tool that can inspire photographers. Use the titles of your favourite songs to define a series of photographs. Be inspired by song lyrics or the theme of an album. Using music as the basis of a photography project is an easy way to inspire creative images.

Try to capture the mood of the song in the photograph; if viewers were looking at your image while the song played in the background, the two ought to work in complete harmony. Turn song titles and lyrics into photograph captions. These types of images work really well on social media, such as Instagram, as the captions can be poetic and meaningful.

Use one lens only

Photographers all have a favourite lens. Put it away and use your least-used lens from your gear. Portrait photographers tend to prefer fixed focal lenses, landscape photographers opt for wide-angle lenses and wildlife photographers always reach for a telephoto lens. Switch up your style by using a lens that you wouldn’t usually choose.

Try create portraits with a macro lens by focusing on minute details of the eye. Capture the beauty of a landscape and change its proportions with a zoom lens. Find a story and tell it

Keep your eyes open for the everyday stories that take place around you. People, animals, places and businesses can offer a variety of fascinating tales.

Speak to people and find out what makes them tick; you may be surprised at some of the incredible untold stories from people you see in your community. Stories of success, hardship, endurance and goodwill can often lead to a captivating series of images that have gallery potential.

If no subject is immediately clear, think about telling your own story through your photographs. There have been a number of renowned photographers that have made their lives the subject of their images. From documenting personal loss, struggles with diseases, childbirth and journeys of discovery, famous photographers have used their lives to inspire creative projects that tell a story.

Choose a different time of day

Most photographers prefer to photograph scenes during the day or at dusk. Whatever your preferred time of day, try step outside your comfort zone and create images at a different time. The time of day or night can have a drastic influence on the aesthetic of an image.

Night is actually an amazing time for photographers. Lights, stars and the darkness can all be used with creative effect. Use a slow shutter speed to play with streaks of light from traffic. Try to capture the beauty of the stars outside of city centres. Use a flash with a long shutter speed to capture movement and stillness at the same time.

Dawn is another beautiful time of day. The light is soft and slightly yellow – like the magical golden hour before sunset. Shadows, silhouettes and reflections

This project really makes you think about a subject in different ways; it forces you to try new compositions and angles. Instead of simply photographing a subject, try to capture its shadow, silhouette or reflection. Shadows can be used to reveal the nature of an obscure subject. A top-down photo of a line of cows may not be immediately clear to a viewer unless there are shadows on the ground that show their shape.

Silhouettes work in a similar way. Instead of making the details of the subject the focus of a photograph, use its silhouette against a dusk sky to make its shape the focus. A rhino on a flat plain can be a stunning subject for a silhouette photo. These images tend to be more artistic that technical.

Lastly, use water and glass to your benefit when creating reflection images. A calm lake or small puddle is perfect for adding a new dynamic to a cityscape. Likewise, bodies of water have been used by many wildlife photographers to add reflections of their subjects. Shop windows and mirrors are also valuable tools when it comes to reflections. Get creative and try your hand at using shadows, silhouettes and reflections to inspire your work.

The Publisher Research Council (PRC) has released its latest research results. They used the global touchpoints model to analyse 23 consumer touchpoints and found that print advertising is still in the top 10. This means that print is still a viable way to reach an audience.

The research was conducted in seven major metropolitan areas and had 1000 respondents. The results show that print advertising scored highly when it came to key consumer touchpoints in paid-for, owned and earned categories.

“It is the responsibility of the PRC, through numerous investigations and research, to provide irrefutable proof that reading, whether online or on paper, delivers the highest brand cognition and recall,” says Pete Langschmidt, consultant to the PRC. The PRC has proven that the written word delivers the highest return on investment (ROI) for advertisers.

Touchpoint survey is an indicator of brand loyalty

The main aim of the PRC’s touchpoint survey is to establish which marketing methods resonate with audiences. It looks at the interaction with various touchpoints to see how brand loyalty is earned.

Brand loyalty is a powerful indicator of purchase behaviour; the fact that more Toyotas and VWs are sold every month than any other brand of car shows how brand loyalty is a valuable asset. Brand loyalty is sometimes more important that word-of-mouth or paid-for advertising when it comes to sales.

The PRC research survey asked respondents whether they recall experiencing various touchpoints and the quality of these interactions. This process allows researchers to see how touchpoint experiences can impact a consumer’s attitude towards a brand.

The results show that print advertising, such a posters and written articles, have a high recall rate amongst consumers. People read magazines and newspapers every day. They also encounter numerous banners, posters, flyers and brochures on a daily basis.

Good synergy between print and television

The PRC research indicates that print is actually the second highest paid-for touchpoint after television. This stands to reason as most advertisers and brands opt for these two marketing strategies first, along with digital. Brands will approach print and TV media outlets to advertise their products.

The research suggests that print is a highly efficient form of advertising as it delivers five times more impact for its investment than radio (i.e. the return on investment is five times higher with print campaigns). Although print only gets a 3.8% share of advertising spend in South Africa, it delivers 19.5% of the impact for a brand.

Print campaigns work especially well when aligned with television. A combination of print and TV advertising can yield a 17% increase in impact. “In almost every instance the television and print combination provides a better impact than a television/radio combination,” says Langschmidt.

“The PRC has been investigating the inherent strengths of the written word for a few years now. This ‘Touchpoint’ research goes a long way in proving that print is an extremely efficient medium, particularly in the automotive category and when combined with a platform like television delivers exceptional results,” he concludes.

South Africa has no shortage of talent and potential. Numerous Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed and directed in South Africa, such as District 9, the 2018 Tomb Raider and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. These films have presented magnificent opportunities for South Africa’s film industry, but young filmmakers and directors aren’t always afforded the opportunity to work on Hollywood films.

Broadcast television and self-publish services are difficult to crack

Similarly, mainstream broadcast television services are not likely to feature the works of young and aspiring filmmakers. These television networks will favour an American or Indian-made film over a locally-produced work by a film student.

The other option previously available to film students was self-publish services. YouTube is a highly-competitive platform with billions of uploads going up every day. It’s hard to get noticed on YouTube nowadays. Users also tend to prefer vlog-style videos rather than artistic films.

Online streaming is a new opportunity

Online streaming could be the saving grace for film students. Showmax, which is owned by satellite television conglomerate DStv, is providing local film students with a massive platform and exposure.

Since February 2019, a number of short films produced by AFDA students have been featured on the online streaming platform. These films range in genre, from drama and fantasy to documentary and animation. They range in runtime from eight minutes to an hour-and-a-half.

“AFDA, Africa’s number-one school for the Creative Economy, is proud to kickstart this exciting and meaningful journey with Showmax and AFDA students, ensuring emerging young African filmmakers’ voices are heard and given a platform,” says CEO of AFDA,Teresa Passchier.

“It’s ground-breaking to share young, local, culturally relevant content on the same platform as Hollywood blockbusters. I am certain that this unique initiative will serve to boost and develop the African film industry and the careers of many young South African and African students alike,” she explains.

Noteworthy student films found on Showmax

Two of the noteworthy films that are featured on Showmax are Junior and O-Puncha. Junior is directed by Bert Dijkstra and won the Audience Award in the ‘Made in South Africa’ category at the 2017 shnit Worldwide Shortfilmfestival awards. O-Puncha is directed by Adam Hansen and picked up two awards, Best Student-made Short and Best Editing, at the Eldorado Film Festival.

Another noteworthy film is Mlu Godola’s Sicela Amanzi, that tackles the subject of water shortages in South Africa. Films, such as these, shed light on serious issues that South Africa is currently facing. They tackle topics head-on and get the audience to think about issues in new ways.

“There’s immense depth of filmmaking talent in Africa and it’s a privilege to be able to give that talent a home and a platform,” says Showmax’s head of content, Candice Fangueiro. “Showmax is becoming part of the fabric of film and TV production in Africa, and importantly we’re doing this as a partner rather than just as a consumer. This is a key competitive advantage of being local and something we aim to continue to work on,” she says.

Advertising is a highly competitive industry in South Africa. With so many agencies of various sizes competing for the lion’s share of the audience, South Africans can easily get lost in the swarm of adverts they get bombarded with every day. To stand out from the crowd, agencies need to become a little more edgy and grab the audience’s attention.

Average advertising campaigns with cringey jingles and lame catch phrases won’t win over an audience. Consumers are becoming experts at blocking out and ignoring most of the adverts they see. It’s a case of too many messages and not enough clout.

If agencies are going to stay relevant and succeed in the future, they need to inspire action and hit the consumer with some fire and flair. Agencies can afford to be more edgy in South Africa; finding a sense of humour and speaking to the audience in a tone to which they can relate.

The days of politeness and soft-selling are gone

Those adverts that position a brand as overly-friendly and helpful are not as effective anymore. Audiences can see through fake slogans and actors with whitened teeth. Too many agencies are still trying to soft-sell brands through happy and fuzzy television adverts. The messages are the same – “we’re here for you”, “trust in our friendly employees” and “your happiness is our priority”.

The best way to stand out now is to take risks. Agencies don’t need to hold back; they should be more direct and in-your-face if they are going to make the consumer sit up and pay attention. Being real about issues is the first step to getting the audience on your side.

Nando’s sums this up and proves a point. By tackling issues of race, politics and black economic empowerment (BEE) in their advertising campaigns, the brand has formed a reputation for being no-nonsense and upfront. People remember their adverts; they get consumers talking and they use a good dose of humour to remind South Africans why the county is so unique.

Edgy adverts are the most memorable

To be effective, you need to be memorable. The consumer needs to have your brand at the top of their mind. Being edgy is the best way to have an impact on the consumer. Another tactic to stand out from the competition is to call them out in your adverts.

One of the best examples of this subtle shade-throwing came from Netflix. Their Man in a Van advert had consumers laughing at the complexities of owning a DStv account. Netflix not-so-subtly called out their rival, DStv, in a bid to show consumers how easy it is to sign up and own a Netflix account.

This cheeky approach can also be seen in the advertising war between Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. There’s no harm in making fun of your competitors through a bit of good banter and audiences love it. They get involved and these types of adverts often go viral online.

Agencies who are not afraid to push boundaries will be victorious. They will stand tall among the field of agencies and distinguish themselves above the rest. Being edgy does come with risks – if done insensitively or by going too far, agencies can land up in legal trouble or alienate their audiences.

However, in a fight for market share, South African agencies do need to start taking more risks and trying new approaches. They need to embrace their edge, use their voice and take a competitive stance in order to win over consumers.

The field of peace-building can incorporate various modes of expression, which makes the arts a valuable resource. Photography, instrumental musical works, drawing, painting, video, dancing, theatre, oral and literary forms of art are just a few examples of media that can aid peace-building.

Artists and communities can contribute to conflict resolution in all stages of the conflict cycle, through creative expression that bridges divides. Works of art that are inclusive and focus on transformation are often more engaging, therefore, inviting transformation to those that witness the artwork.

Collective works of art are participatory and focus on affirmation at the level of the community. This helps to transcend societal barriers as various creators participate in the realisation of the artwork. However, individual artists, musicians, directors and writers can also contribute to a more fair and less violent society through their works.

Unique aspects of the arts for peace-building

Art has certain qualities of attention and response that contribute to its aesthetic. Different cultures value different aesthetics and this influences the way in which societies approach art. Aesthetic experiences are deeply felt by humans and can facilitate engagement with nature and humanity.

This engagement arises from the reciprocity between the art being perceived and the perceptual capacity of the perceiver. Aesthetic connection with a work is the result of the interplay between the formal qualities of the artwork and the perceiver’s openness to receiving the nuances of the work; allowing the art to resonate within them.

Even when an artwork’s content is offensive, upsetting or painful, its formal qualities can force the perceiver to take action and face conditions that might usually be unbearable. Aesthetic experiences engage directly with the senses, emotions, spiritual and cognitive aspects of the perceiver.

These qualities of the arts present unique opportunities for individuals to learn from, engage with and connect to the artworks – all of which are central to peace-building. Engaging with the arts can restore and nurture humanity’s capacity for transformation and conflict resolution.

The ability to express oneself and create awareness of context is the first step to getting others to perceive an artist’s point of view or situation. Presenting alternative circumstances can allow the artist to change the perception of the viewer and invite them into the artist’s world. This can level the field and encourage dialogue that results in conflict resolution and peace-building.

Art breaks language barriers

Most conflict arises from misunderstanding; a language barrier is often the major contributor to this non-understanding between different societies. However, the arts can transcend language and allow for non-verbal communication.

Music, dance, photography and paintings can be appreciated by humans, regardless of what language they speak. In peace-building initiatives, the arts can embody reciprocity to encourage connectivity and mutual understanding. The arts can be used to facilitate engagement in a non-coercive manner that allows conflicting communities to address their differences.

In conflict regions around the world, the arts have been used in peace-building efforts to strengthen the campaigns of peacemakers through supporting and dignifying oppressed and exploited communities. By focussing on human rights in their works, artists have enabled cross-cultural communication between oppressors and the oppressed.

The arts also present an opportunity for conflicting parties to meet in a neutral, positive and creative context. Art can break down stereotypes and the barriers of mistrust between adversarial communities, paving the way for reconciliation and justice. It restores identity, meaning and hope to regions that were previously alienated and disrupted by conflict.

Challenges facing the arts in peace-building

While the arts have a profoundly positive role to play in peace-building, they also face several challenges. A team of researchers has been looking at the ways in which the arts run the risk of doing more harm to conflicting communities.

The first challenge is the role of the arts in propaganda, such as that used by Nazi Germany during World War II. Creative posters were distributed widely that depicted the allied forces as the source of evil, which encouraged many patriotic Germans to join the fight. Radio broadcasts were emitted across Germany with powerful language and speeches that were designed to legitimise and promote Nazi activities.

The arts can worsen divisions between adversarial groups if it is used to re-traumatise communities that have suffered severe violence at the hands of their enemies. Art should be used to heal, not to reopen old wounds.

The transformative power of the arts lies in artistic integrity; using the arts for the greater good of both communities while adhering to ethical standards. When artists allow their agenda to overpower their artistry, the potential of their work for peace-building is compromised.

These risks can be minimised through collaboration and careful consideration of the cultural nuances of each community in a conflict situation. If two artists from opposing societies can collaborate on a peace-building project, the chance of success is improved.

Solutions to various forms of conflict, whether political, religious, environmental or educational, will require creative approaches in the future. Arts-based peace-building initiatives can help communities to identify the source of conflict and to craft appropriate solutions for conflict resolution.

Design has a major role to play in the rise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Although art and design don’t immediately spring to mind at the mention of science and technology, these mediums can find themselves at the core of the latest revolution. Here are four ways that design will help to shape the Fourth Industrial Revolution:

1. Reducing the skills gap

Art and design are key pillars of any educational curriculum. In the technology-driven world of today, design and art play an important role in the development of skills in schoolchildren. Research has shown that education in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) is simply not enough to reduce skills gaps in society.

Emotional education is just as important as STEM and that is best taught through the arts. Education needs to focus on the interdisciplinary, cross-functional and cross-cultural abilities of students. Art can transcend these barriers and lines, making it a valuable educational tool for the development of society

Creativity and imagination also allow people to devise the newest technologies. Without imagination, there would be no advancement. Design is integral to the successful planning and manufacture of new technologies. If more people learn the fundamentals of design and creativity, the skills gap that exists in modern society could be reduced.

Design education will ensure that more people have the ability to create and improve society. It will ensure that new technology is always human-centred and useful to an increasingly diverse population. Arts and humanities need to be at the centre of technological advancements to ensure that they are helpful to humanity.

2. Trust in technology

Design and art are necessary tools for building an emotional framework to make sense of new technologies. Design builds trust in technology. If a device has been designed with the user at the forefront, it will be intuitive and reliable.

Society will trust new technologies more if people can immediately see how it will benefit them. If the technology has been designed to make life easier or to perform a complex task, humans will be more likely to trust it. Design allows people to engage with the technology more easily, making adaptation more effortless.

3. Integrating design into prototyping

Design allows us to overcome the current shortfalls of technology and to dive deep into the “what if” scenario. Putting design and art at the heart of technology development will improve these systems for future generations. Prototypes can be tested and refined if design is brought to the forefront of the process.

Design knowledge will also allow technology creators to critique their work before putting it into full-scale production. They will be able to critically assess the usability and functionality of their creations before selling it to the public. Prototyping is an important feature of refining ideas and perfecting products, so design needs to be a core pillar.

4. Design shaping the future of healthcare

The Fourth Industrial Revolution goes hand-in-hand with improving healthcare. One of the key research developments is to make healthcare more patient-centric, affordable and accessible. Design has a role to play in this endeavour.

When medicinal breakthroughs happen, they become a testimony to the advancement of technology and society. The future of healthcare lies in precision medicine and individualised treatments. These processes will require the design of medical equipment to be adjustable and programmable.

Design and art can lead the way to the future and act as catalysts for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The arts will be fundamental in a world dominated by science and technology. They will allow humans to be empathetic, emotional and thoughtful; emotions are important to developing useful technology that serves humanity better.

Drones are quieter, easier to maneuvre and cheaper to run than helicopters. Although, flying a drone is not as easy as it may look. The controllers on the ground need skills and practice to be able to pilot the drone smoothly and safely.

Drones are valuable for filmmakers

Drones have become an indispensable piece of equipment for filmmakers. They allow the filmmaker to kill two birds with one stone – that is playing the role of a helicopter pilot and cameraman at the same time.

What’s more, drone cameras are highly advanced. They shoot ultra high-resolution video in a variety of frame rates, such as 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Some are even capable of carrying advanced cameras onboard for those epic scenes that need specialised equipment.

Drones vary widely

There is a huge variety of drones on the market. Some are small and cheap, others are advanced but expensive. Generally speaking, the cheaper the drone, the smaller, lighter and fragile it is. The more expensive drones are robust, heavier and have better cameras.

Depending on the nature of the film or documentary, a filmmaker can find a drone that will suit their budget and needs. Beginners are advised to purchase smaller and cheaper drones; learning to fly them properly will be easier. The more expensive drones are complicated and can cost a fortune to repair if crashed.

Things to know as a drone controller

Filmmakers need to consider airspace rules and regulations in the area. Certain airspaces are restricted to drones, such as nearby airports, certain buildings and in popular commercial flight paths. Drone controllers need to know and obey the restrictions on flight at all times to avoid possible prosecution.

Other issues to be aware of include discomfort in the presence of a drone. Some people and animals do not like drone flying around. Humans can be particularly offended by the presence of a drone if they feel that their privacy is being violated. Some animals are also scared of drones and panic when one hovers nearby. Controllers and filmmakers should always be respectful of other people and animals when operating drones.

• The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) in the United States first approved the use of drones for filmmaking in 2014.
• The New York City Drone Festival was the first drone-orientated film festival in the world and took place in March 2015.
• A drone and camera crew can cost around one-fifth of the price of a helicopter and pilot per day.
• Popular films and series that use drones for filming include Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, James Bond Skyfall and Narcos.

Drones have a valuable role to play in the future of filmmaking. Know what the consumer wants

A good brand will know their target market intimately. It will know what the consumer wants and why. Through engagement and careful studying of the target market, a brand can get the answers they need in order to better understand their customers. Brands should aim to answer the consumer’s questions before they even ask it. Start to interact with your consumers and find out what they really want and how your brand can help them.

Make it easy for the consumer

Everything your brand does should be aimed at making the consumer’s life easier. Whether it is making a purchase online, booking a ticket or finding an email address, the customer should never have to work when doing business with your brand. A simple process makes for a happy customer. Tell your target market how to buy your product and make the steps simple and fast. They’ll appreciate the efficiency and return to your brand again and again.

Be responsive

Too many brands claim to be responsive. When consumers ask questions on your website or social media channels, try to reply to them within a day. Consumers appreciate honest feedback and swift responses to their queries. Follow up on these responses and ask the customer if they are happy with the interaction. Take criticism and make an effort to rectify any grievances with people as this will protect your reputation as a trustworthy brand.

Keep it simple

Don’t try too hard when it comes to branding, website design and product packaging. Simple is almost always better. If the consumer struggles to read your website because there are too many animations, weird fonts and bright colours, they will simply leave and never come back. Branding includes everything that the consumer sees. Keep your website simple and easy to use. The same goes for product packaging. It should be well-designed and easy to recognise.

Quality wins every time

The first thing a consumer wants from a brand is quality – more value for their money. You need to deliver a quality product or service and back it up with a satisfying customer experience. Consumers take about three seconds to determine if a product is high-quality or not. You can make this process quicker by telling them why your offering is the best through simple adverts and call-to-action buttons.

A bad user or customer experience will kill the bond with a brand. Work hard to ensure the five steps above are cemented into your branding and company culture. Looking after the consumer is the only way to build a strong, trustworthy relationship with the consumer.
